It offers a similarly laid-back Greek island vibe, with stunning beaches and delicious cuisine, though is quickly becoming more well-known.<\/p>\n

Dubbed the \u2018foodie\u2019 island, I find Sifnos to be the perfect blend of what the Greek Islands are known for. Just enough beaches to explore, with plenty of variety, a great mix of casual dining and high-end meals, and an array of options for staying on the island from romantic villas to charming Greek homes to family-friendly vacation properties and more. If I had to summarize Sifnos in one word, it would be the crowd-pleaser. Read on for my take on the best this gem of an island has to offer.<\/p>\n

Where to Stay on Sifnos<\/h2>\n

In researching Sifnos before our visit, the information online fell short. Faros, for instance, was listed as ‘too quiet’ with limited food options. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The restaurants here are incredible, and\u00a0Faros town is one of the most charming on the island, with stone steps and sea views around nearly every corner. <\/strong>Plus, it’s perfectly positioned between two of the best beaches on Sifnos. If I was planning this trip again, I’d stay in Faros (and this would be the house rental I’d book<\/a> without hesitation).<\/p>\n

When I planned our first trip here I wanted to stay in a town for once (rather than beachside), so I split this trip up with two stay locations and prioritized convenience. We stayed first in a rental home in Artemonas<\/a> within walking distance of delicious restaurants. For the second half of our trip, we opted for a hotel stay at Verina Terra<\/a> across from Platys Gialos beach. My takeaway: this was a great way to explore both the north and south sides of the island. We hit the northern beaches above Artemonas first, then spent the second half of the trip enjoying the southern coast. It felt like two entirely different island experiences.<\/p>\n

Best Areas to Stay on Sifnos<\/h3>\n

Faros: The Most Charming Place to Stay in Sifnos<\/strong> Faros captures the best of Greek village charm and beautiful beaches in one small stretch. Traditional architecture meets trendy restaurants and two distinct beach areas. Stay:<\/em><\/strong> Nos Hotel & Villas<\/a><\/p>\n

Artemonas: Restaurants and Traditional Sifnian Village Charm<\/strong> A quintessential Greek town centered around a church with winding side streets. Artemonas offers an authentic local experience with excellent restaurants, away from beach crowds. Stay:<\/em><\/strong> house rental<\/a> or nearby in Apollonia at Nival Boutique Hotel<\/a><\/p>\n

Platis Gialos: Best Stretch in Sifnos for a Variety of Restaurants and Beach Bars <\/strong>The liveliest area on the island, Platis Gialos buzzes around sunset with numerous restaurants and hotels lining the long stretch of beach. Stay<\/strong><\/em>: Verina Terra<\/a><\/p>\n

Vathi: A Quiet, Car-Free Beach Town in Sifnos<\/strong> With only one parking lot at the entrance, Vathi requires you to walk through town along the water. This area felt more local and peaceful to us, an atmosphere perfect for those seeking a slower pace with a handful of restaurant options. Stay:<\/em><\/strong> Elias Resort<\/a><\/p>\n

Kamares: Best for Families, Short Stays, or No Rental Car<\/strong> I shy away from port towns on almost every Greek Island, but Kamares might be the exception. The beach is absolutely dreamy, with a long stretch of sand and ample beach bars. The nearby ferry port makes it incredibly convenient for families who want a short stay or those who want to keep transportation simple. Stay:<\/em><\/strong> Apsila Pool Suites<\/a><\/p>\n

Sifnos House<\/strong><\/a> – $$ – A collection of traditional houses renovated with contemporary touches throughout the island.
\nEnalion Suites Sifnos<\/strong><\/a> – $$ – Beachfront suites in Platis Gialos with direct beach access and traditional Cycladic architecture.
\nApsila Pool Suites<\/a><\/strong> – $$$ – These stunning and beautifully designed suites with a pool are a vision of understated Cycladic luxury, perched above Kamares Beach.
\nVerina Astra<\/strong><\/a> – $$$ – A design-lover’s dream, this boutique property features dramatic cliffside views and beautiful minimalist design. Adults only, though you can dine at their on property restaurant Bostani with kids.
\nVerina Terra<\/strong><\/a> – $$$ – The sister property of Verina Astra is great for families and couples alike. It’s located across the street from Platis Gialos beach and surrounded by restaurants. Where I stayed (note it books up very early!)<\/strong>

\nFlaros Village<\/strong><\/a> – $$ – Kamares beachfront apartments offering simple, comfortable accommodations near the port.
\nFaros Residences<\/strong><\/a> – $$$ – A collection of homes in the charming Faros village with easy beach access.
\nNireas Stone House<\/a><\/strong> – $$$ – A traditional stone home in the middle of Apollonia’s lower downtown, steps from a variety of restaurants, tavernas and shops.

The Best Restaurants on Sifnos<\/h2>\n

Cafe Mosaic<\/strong><\/a> – One of our favorite meals on the island, and the only spot we returned to. Always busy, this traditional Greek restaurant with contemporary twists has everything you want: perfectly executed dishes packed with flavor.<\/p>\n

Theodorou’s Sweet Shop<\/strong><\/a> – Picture quintessential Greek Yiayias (grandmas) rolling pastry dough. This legendary bakery is worth a stop for sweet treats and a peek at traditional Greek pastry-making.<\/p>\n

Omega 3<\/strong><\/a> – This restaurant is an island institution, and for good reason: it has the freshest sushi on the island, an unexpected gem in the Cyclades. Reservations recommended – request a seat on the sand.<\/p>\n

Cantina<\/strong><\/a> – An elevated dining experience overlooking the beach, melding local and sustainable practices. The previous owner of Omega 3, Giorgos Samoilis, created Cantina with a no waste concept. Reservations are necessary.<\/p>\n

Smaragdi Restaurant<\/strong><\/a> – A great casual spot for breakfast or brunch if you’re staying in Artemonas.<\/p>\n

The Oil Mill (\u03a4\u03bf \u039b\u03b9\u03bf\u03c4\u03c1\u03af\u03b2\u03b9) <\/strong><\/a>– This family-run spot across from Smaragdi Hotel serves delicious homemade pastitsio and lamb.<\/p>\n

Nus Restaurant<\/strong><\/a> – Chic, creative dishes with beautiful uninterrupted sea views in Platis Gialos.<\/p>\n

Bostani Bar & Restaurant<\/strong> <\/a>– Excellent food with beautiful views overlooking the water, perfect for a date night. Located on the Verina Astra property.<\/p>\n

Ammoudia (\u0397 \u0391\u03bc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03b9\u03ac)<\/strong><\/a> – A family-run spot on Cheronissos beach with fresh catch of the day. You can’t miss it: there are only two restaurants on this beach, and this is the one on the sand.<\/p>\n

Tsikali<\/strong><\/a> – Tucked behind the church on Vathy, most visitors miss this relaxed traditional restaurant that’s definitely worth a visit. It’s especially family-friendly, with plenty of space for kids to play on the sand.<\/p>\n

Pelicanos<\/strong><\/a> – A casual spot for toast, drinks and light bites on the sand in Faros. Great for a light lunch on the beach.<\/p>\n

Limanaki Fish Tavern<\/strong><\/a> – This Sifnian spot on the water has delicious traditional seafood specialties in a local setting.<\/p>\n

Yellow Bicycle<\/strong><\/a> – A quaint bakery in Artemonas, perfect for an afternoon pick-me-up or an escape from the heat.<\/p>\n

Urchin<\/a><\/strong> – Incredible sushi and omakase on Faros beach – we didn’t make it here, but I’ve heard it’s fantastic.<\/p>\n

The Best Beaches on Sifnos<\/h2>\n

Cheronissos Beach<\/strong><\/a> – Located on the northernmost point, this charming beach with fishing boats and two delicious restaurants (one on the sand, one right next to the water) quickly became a favorite. Go early to snag a great spot by the water\u2014you may want to spend most of the day here.<\/p>\n

Kamares Beach<\/strong><\/a> – Unlike most port beaches in Greece, Kamares is genuinely worth a visit. The calm, shallow waters are perfect for children (though be aware some of the larger ferries will create waves on arrival at the port nearby). The backdrop of mountainous terrain and white houses is incredibly picturesque. A number of cafes and restaurants line the sand and main street, giving you plenty of options without feeling overwhelming.<\/p>\n

Vathy Beach<\/strong><\/a> – Don’t miss the small cove tucked away from the main stretch, perfect for an evening dinner on the sand near the nearby church. A few restaurants offer beachfront dining.<\/p>\n

Faros Beach<\/strong><\/a> – My favorite beach on the island. Split in half by a small cluster of Greek dwellings and trendy restaurants, the first half offers ample seating and some umbrellas with easy access to dining on the sand. Venture up the stairs through the small village, and you’ll discover another stretch of beach (Vlich\u00f3 Beach<\/a><\/strong>) with olive trees, a perfect little cove for afternoon dips and sunning.<\/p>\n

Chrisopigi Beach<\/strong><\/a> – Perhaps one of the most relaxed beaches on the island, with easy access to park and walk onto the sand. There is one family-friendly restaurant with lunch options right on the water.<\/p>\n

Platis Gialos<\/strong><\/a> – The longest stretch of beach with plenty of sun umbrellas. One of the main thoroughfares of the island, it’s lively and has the most variety of restaurants and beach bars to choose from.<\/p>\n

Where to Watch the Sunset on Sifnos<\/h2>\n

The Church of Agios Symeon<\/strong><\/a> – Offers an amazing view at one of the highest points on the island. Note that it involves a steep drive to get to the top.<\/p>\n

Monastery of Prophet Elias<\/strong><\/a> – Another great option with fewer crowds as it involves a 15-20 minute hike.<\/p>\n

Kamares Beach<\/strong><\/a> – An easy option to enjoy watching the sun go down with a drink in hand. Paralia Beach Bar touts itself as one of the best sunset spots on Sifnos.<\/p>\n

Loggia Wine Bar<\/strong><\/a> – While this location won’t give you a direct view of the sun, the atmosphere and high view over the water makes it one of the best spots to watch the sky change colors.<\/p>\n

How do I get to Sifnos by ferry?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Other than accessing Sifnos through Athens (Piraeus port), the island is also well-connected to other Cyclades islands including Serifos (20-40 minutes), Milos (40-50 minutes), Paros (1-1.5 hours), and Santorini (2.5-3 hours). Book ferries in advance during peak season (July-August) as routes can sell out.<\/p>\n

How many days should I spend on Sifnos?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I recommend spending at least 5 days on Sifnos, as it has plenty to explore to fill up a week. This will give you time to explore the different beach areas, try some incredible restaurants, and experience the busy and quiet sides of Sifnos without feeling rushed.<\/p>\n

Is Sifnos good for families with kids?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, Sifnos is a great option for families. The island offers numerous restaurants right on the beach, plenty of accommodation options from hotels to spacious villas, and manageable topography and roads that are easy to navigate with a rental car. The majority of beaches have calm, shallow waters perfect for young swimmers, and you can easily stay within your chosen area without extensive driving. It is worth noting that like most Greek Islands, Sifnos isn’t very stroller-friendly.<\/p>\n

Sifnos versus other Greek Islands: who is it best for?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sifnos is most similar to Folegandros<\/a> in terms of charm and authentic Greek character, Serifos in terms of size and manageability, and Paros<\/a> for its restaurant and nightlife options.
